In Print: Marc Jacobs & Juergen Teller

Innovative photographer Juergen Teller has collaborated with Marc Jacobs on the advertising campaigns for the men’s and women’s Marc Jacobs collections, Marc by Marc Accessories, and Marc Jacobs perfume lines for more than a decade. Teller’s idiosyncratic visual style and use of unusual models have been instrumental in establishing what today has become one of the preeminent fashion brands in history. Not to say that Marc Jacobs’ designs have not been progressive or fashion-forward, but the designing icon was not initially convinced that traditional marketing could sell his clothes. In enlisting Teller, Jacobs knowingly rejected the use of conventional models and settings to create the image of his company.
Reflecting the intelligence and individuality of the Marc Jacobs brand, Teller’s photography has featured a wide range of artists and cultural icons, including the likes of Sofia Coppola, Meg White, Thurston Moore, Rufus Wainwright, Cindy Sherman, Winona Ryder, Victoria Beckham, and Teller himself, among many others. The hardcover 576-page volume, Juergen Teller: Marc Jacobs Advertising 1998-2009, which will be released in bookstores on June 30, 2009, brings together a wide range of Teller’s images from all of Marc Jacobs’ campaigns. It is a “fashion bible” of sorts which highlights a creative milestone in fashion and visual collaboration.
