Anti-It Bag

The It-bag: instantly recognisable, the ultimate status symbol and emblem of success. From the ‘Paddington’ to the ‘Lariat,’ for years women have longed to have each season’s It-bag hanging from their arm. But in an economic downturn, somehow a bag which symbolizes status and extravagance doesn’t seem quite right. It seems fair to say that It-bags are dead and buried; after all, who wants to carry the same handbag as everyone else? We would all love to follow the advice of “invest in a classic” and rush to place our names on the infamous Hermès Birkin Bag waiting list or purchase Chanel’s iconic 2.55. But in reality it seems that the new ‘quiet bags’ are the perfect, chic replacement to the brash It-bag. More understated than their flashy predecessors, the Selfridges accessories buyer Lydia Kind describes them as having “strong shapes, fabrics, and high fashion detailing.”

Invest in a classic, beautiful piece by Mulberry or head to Alexander Wang who pierces a deceptively discreet black bag with chunky gold studs. Proenza Schouler’s handbag collection is the embodiment of the anti-It bag. The leather satchels play with the luxurious and the classic, with staple, gender-bending practical messenger bags available in luxurious black python, proving a classic yet luxe addition to your wardrobe. Neutral bags are also a perfect antidote to the brash, extravagant ‘It-bag’ with butter soft leather and squashy shapes making for tactile classics. For a cheaper alternative head towards the high street. Topshop boasts a range of leather, suede and stud satchels whilst Forever 21’s utilitarian shoulder bag with its many pockets, zippers, and relaxed structure is a perfect summer staple in the style of an Alexander Wang creation. Of course when it comes to purchasing a classic, understated handbag one cannot beat a leather satchel sourced from a local vintage or charity shop.

There is something beautiful about a worn leather satchel. Turn to rutbag, an ethical brand that really appreciates the beauty of imperfection. They proclaim that the bags are not perfect, but this is something they are proud of. Handcrafted and truly unique, the hole punching, stitching, colour, and texture of each bag is different. These variations add character to a bag which will only improve with time and is guaranteed to age beautifully. Normally a new leather bag is awkwardly pristine and shiny taking years to break in, but rutbag’s pieces skip this stage selling pouches, messengers and classic handbags in a rugged and vintage-like condition. With prices ranging from about £17 to £65 these bags are the perfect trend-proof, affordable, and guilt-free accessory, particularly considering the brand’s ethical stance. For every bag sold money is given directly to the Salaam Balaak trust, a charity which aims to provide shelter, food, education, and a safe, caring family environment to Delhi’s street children. This summer don’t fear imperfection or individuality, and reach for a quieter, chicer handbag, something which can be loved, cherished and worn with pride every season.

  1. I’ve railed against status bags before and really do feel they’re a waste. But then, I’ve carried the same bag almost daily for three years and plan to use it till it DIES. This is a movement I can get behind: Classic, utilitarian, gorgeously made bags. Those Rutbags are particularly appealing.
