Maneuvering the Beltway

You know the drill: the black mini you died for last year suddenly looks drab even without institutional lighting, or that scrumptious high-waisted skirt is suddenly sinking into unchartered waters. Don’t despair—belts are back in a big way and this season, they’re scattered among all types of get-ups. Think more decoration than mere practicality from fall ‘09 collections. Models trotted down the runway in cinched ensembles that ran the gamut from grandpa-inspired leather over a baggy blazer at Alessandro Dell’Acqua, to shiny black and gold with a navy mini dress at Cynthia Steffe.

Another standout collection featuring the belt was DSquared2‘s creative and varied approach to the oval wonder: black and studded over a cardigan, slung across the hips with roomy khakis, or casually looped burgundy over a plaid dress (and yes, the models are also rocking venti coffees and magazines in true fashionista form). Balenciaga showed a particularly thick and chic version; emphasis is on the thick as black leather loops around the waist and ties with a flourish.

Once you’re thoroughly inspired by the runway’s takes on getting cinched, belt up in some of the flattering styles in stores now. Eugenia Kim’s Patent Abby Belt ($185) is a great choice for a wide beauty and is available in multiple colors. Thinner contenders include trendy options from Calleen Cordero, such as black leather with gold toned square studs ($195) or distressed silver metallic ($155), are available at Barneys New York. Ending on a splurge, lust after Lanvin’s black satin Bow Belt ($460), which is artfully runched to perfection. And, of course, vintage stores are a must-stop, as is your grandmother’s closet.

  1. I feel blessed to have a beltable figure. I know so many women feel left out from the belting bonanza that’s been raging for several seasons …

  2. Agreed….belting can be verrrry tricky but I’ve found that a belt over a jacket can be much more flattering!
I found this fantastic skinny brown belt by BCBG and an ADAM (Adam Lippes) blazer and together my look turned out to be both polished and slimming!
