Miss Misa

Misa Chien is a Los Angeles-based jewelry designer and model. We love her designs because each piece is unique, timeless, and many are vintage-inspired or reference history (i.e., the Mary and Madeleine necklace). The collection is also very affordable and would make great gifts for your friends, or for yourself!

The Supermelon (SM): Tell us a bit about yourself.
Misa: After just graduating from UCLA, I am off to the real world! I now work full-time as a model, working with clients such as Target, Abercrombie, and Macy’s. I love modeling because it allows me to travel, one of my greatest passions in life. Since I was little I have traveled everywhere from Cambodia to Morocco with my family. Now with modeling, I shoot everywhere from San Miguel Al Allende in Mexico to New York City.

In addition to modeling, I am also a jewelry designer. I run Miss Misa, a jewelry line inspired by French art and architecture. The main reason I started Miss Misa was because I believe that people must follow their passions. Whatever it is that they want to do in life, they should try to find some way to do it. I have found a way to follow my passion, and I hope that I may inspire others to do the same! :)

SM: Where do you get your inspiration from?
Misa: I have a book that I made called “Misa’s Book” where I cut out images of items I love in magazines. I started it in high school, and it’s just kind of expanded since then. I’d also say the world and my travels. Each country I go to, I usually end up purchasing an accessory or piece of clothing that complements my wardrobe.

I love going to estate sales, especially in Bel Air. I love seeing the contents of people’s lives, and how they used to live. I usually go the last 15 minutes of an estate sale, where everything is at a great price. Last weekend, I bought a 1930’s chandelier for $15 and an 1800’s Japanese jewelry box for $5. That’s where the real treasures can be found.

SM: What are some of your most beloved finds?
Misa: 1980’s vintage French sunglasses with an “M” engraved on the frames. When I saw them I thought, “These sunglasses are meant for me!” I also love antique wedding invitations and postcards. At the age of 12 I found an antique 1910 Eiffel Tower Postcard that I still always treasure in my heart.

  2. While those of your age are out wasting their parents’ money, here you are: young, focused, stable…making a name for yourself.

I had the same enthusiasm when I was your age, the only differene is that I had a daughter to raise.
I have circumnavigated the world, I have been a young entrepreneur and artist, I have planted my share of trees…
Now, I sit, pensive of things that have and could have been….

I wish you all the stars, go for it.
