Dressed to the Nines

New Year’s Eve is a welcoming of fresh beginnings: a champagne-infused embrace of what’s to come. So what better way to celebrate amongst the bubbly and confetti than in a brand new dress? New Year’s Eve is the ultimate occasion to wear something on trend. This is your first chance of the year to go all out, so make the most of it. Take inspiration from Stella McCartney’s florals or embrace the epitome of elegance in something reminiscent of Lanvin. Alternatively, try something original à la Erdem; quinessential quirkiness. Whatever you choose, make sure you stand out and be sure it will make the most daring of fashionistas proud. Before you embark on your outfit purchasing and planning, here are five important rules to take into consideration:

1. Comfort. This is a fun night, but it won’t be if you’re struggling to breathe in a frock too tight. As Coco Chanel said, “Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury”; live up to this and make sure your dress doesn’t bulge, ride up, or interfere with your breathing.

2. Knee Length is the limit. Long Elegance is not an option here. Save the ostentatious ball gowns for another occasion. New Year’s welcomes modernity, so Guinevere-esque gowns will not only look out of place but also completely ridiculous.

3. Apply Glitter/Glitz Sparingly. Leave the bling to the confetti; anything too rhinestone laden or glittery will look tacky, foolish, and clichéd. NOT the way to enter 2009.

4. Let the Dress Speak for Itself. Choose a statement garment, one that turns heads. Avoid heavy or excessive jewelry, instead allow the dress to be the ensemble’s focal point.

5. Strap on the Heels, Forget the Flats. If you can afford a pair, Louboutins will create the ideal style marriage between your legs and your dress. If not, try a very high-heeled style, think chunky and attention-grabbing. Take inspiration from any of the wonderful footwear sported by the Olsen Twins.

Oprah says, “Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right.” In this light, the New Year is about a new you. Let go of all the fashion faux pas you might’ve committed this year, all the style mistakes you might’ve made, and let your New Year’s Eve dress speak of new fashion possibilities; ones that will see you through 2009 and beyond.

  1. shouldn’t we be hitting a slightly more positive note here? fashion should be focusing on your successes, not avoiding mistakes by following rules, etctera.
but this is a nice article. i like the dresses featured. wish i was going somewhere that warranted one of them, plus chunky heels!
