Formal Functionality

Giorgio Armani’s pre-fall 2009 runway showed none of the dramatic details typical of the designer’s work. Perhaps in keeping with the restrained mood plaguing other industries, the collection stands firmly on the side of simplicity and understated elegance and displayed only minimalist embellishments and neutral colors.
In using a palette of blacks, grays and neutrals, Armani created garments appropriate for the chic professional wardrobe, a concept echoed by mix-and-match tailored jackets in versatile weights, modest pencil skirts, and pants ranging from narrow to wide in fit. The narrow silhouettes, which could gracefully transition from day to night, were accompanied by equally sophisticated after-dark looks, including clean and elegant cocktail dresses and gowns.
