Real Style: Aimee Song, San Francisco
By Hanna Kim • Feb 13th, 2009 • Category: Style
We first heard about Aimee of Song of Style when one of our international readers from Seoul suggested her for Real Style. She immediately made an impression on us with her effortlessly chic style—she is one of those people who looks like they just threw something on and looks incredible. We also love that she is versatile; one moment, we see an edgy glam rocker girl, and the next moment, a very pretty, feminine girl. Aimee is a beautiful girl with a style uniquely her own.
Your blog and the name, Song of Style, are so cute! How did you come up with the name?
When I was thinking about my blog name I wanted the blog to consist of my name as it was going to be a blog about me, and one night when I was about to sleep, it just came up randomly.
You have a very versatile style, how would you describe your personal style?
I definitely love to mix different styles. I love adding some grunginess to my outfits, and love wearing lots of jewelry (especially bracelets and necklaces). When I’m wearing a very casual, laid-back outfit, I like to dress it up with a blazer and dressy shoes.
Where did you grow up and how has that influenced your style?
I was born and raised in Los Angeles. In junior high I opened my eyes to fashion after going to the Melrose strip. Every Saturday my sister and I would beg our dad to take us to Melrose and he would drop us off there and we would walk around the entire strip all day to look at super stylish people and stores with amazing clothes. To be honest, there were a lot of hot stylish guys (later we realized that a lot of them were gay) and that was the other reason we went there so much. Growing up in L.A., the melting pot capital where there are so many different personalities and different cultures, has truly inspired me and influenced the way I dress; although I’m probably not even half as stylish as those people I grew up watching.

Who are your fashion icons?
My fashion/style icons change all the time, but definitely my mom is my favorite style icon as she was the one to open my eyes to fashion and she’s a genius in styling. I also love Melanie Hyunh’s clean yet comfortable Parisian chic look, Chloe Sevingny’s daring style, and Alexa Chung’s messy yet presentable look.
You have your own Etsy store—do you hand make each headband piece? Are you planning on creating other types of accessories?
Yes, I hand make each piece and would love to create more accessories in the future when I have the time and enough resources. =) However for now, I’ve been giving the headbands to my friends for free since I feel bad about accepting money from them. (I do get free lunches though! Haha)
What inspires you?
Literally, EVERYTHING. I get inspired from artworks in the galleries I see on my way to school, super stylish people on the streets, web and magazines, the music I listen to, and much more.
On my playlist…
Adele- Hometown Glory & Chasing Pavements
T.I.- I’m On Top of the World, Whatever You Like
Gym Class Heroes- Cookie Jar
Akon- Clap Again
Kate Nash- Foundation
Jack Johnson- Flake
Kanye West’s whole album
Shifty- Easy cuz beautiful
Flobots- Handlebars
and I could go on for at least an hour…
Where are some of your favorite places to shop?
If I were in L.A. right now, the first place I’d go to would be Wasteland in Santa Monica (there is also one on Melrose), which is a secondhand vintage store that sells awesome vintage clothes. That was the first secondhand store I’ve ever shopped at and what got me hooked on vintage clothes.

For jewelry, I always go to Forever 21 since they have a broad selection of awesome super cheap stuff, and American Apparel is the best place to shop for basic items such as v-necks, tank tops, etc.
I love almost everything from Urban Outfitters but they tend to be pretty pricey, so I wait until their items go on sale and dig through the sale aisles like a mad woman.
What’s on your fashion wish list?
I really want Sonia Rykiel’s wedges, any Miu Miu bag, YSL tribute heels, despite the 5 1/2″ heel height (I probably can’t even walk in them but I still want them!), and an awesome colorful sequin top/jacket. Probably can’t afford any of them so I’ll just keep on dreaming!
Your favorite thing to do on a Saturday?
Walking around in the city with one hand holding my boyfriend’s hand, the other holding a Cold Stone ice cream.
