Real Style: Ev’Yan Nasman – Pasadena, CA

By Jenna Fain • Oct 3rd, 2008 • Category: Style

Ev’Yan is a daydreamer – she frequently meditates on “the good stuff” in her life and molds her style from the things that make her a whole, happy person. Her process of self-discovery never ends, and this is the key ingredient to her artistic, experimental look. Ev’Yan knows that she does not have to stick to a singular style identity, but that it can stem from a funky amalgam of cultural influences.

Your look? My style is androgynous and minimalistic; I draw my inspiration from men’s styles. Sometimes my style can be slightly feminine with a harder edge. I have comfort in mind. I hate to be pulling or tugging at something all day for the sake of looking perfect.

What inspires you? Music - Radiohead, Sia, Mogwai, Broken Social Scene, Air, and ‘60s rock. Incognito celebrities, my paintings, and certain movies like, Lie With Me and Wicker Park. I love classic black and white movies for the eloquent way they spoke back then. Lately, I’ve been most inspired by the city life and weather here in L.A. Also, Erin Wasson.

Gig? Believe it or not, I am a happy-go-lucky, stay at home “housewife.” My “job” right now consists of helping my husband with his personal development blog. I oversee his social media and edit his articles. When I’m not working on his blog, I am writing for my blog, painting, listening to music, and playing with my little dog, Sofie Aiko.

Currently coveting? For the longest time, I’ve wanted Ray-Ban sunglasses, and I just recently got them for my birthday. There’s really nothing that I could covet more than those sunglasses, but I would like a few chunky sweaters for autumn and maybe some cowboy boots…

Grooving to? I’ve been getting into older Radiohead; their later albums like The Bends & Pablo Honey. Also, Thievery Corporation, Kings of Leon, and Tool (thanks to my husband). I have sporadic taste! I am trying to discover artists I’ve never heard of before…any suggestions?

Most beloved finds? I am obsessed with tights. But would you believe that I rarely ever go shopping? Sure, I pick up staples here and there, but most of my outfits consist of pieces I’ve already had for years. I constantly recycle my clothing.

If you could raid anyone’s closet, whose would it be & why? I would love to raid Kirsten Dunst’s closet. I’ve always been a fan of her fashion statements & I feel that her style closely mimics mine (or the other way around). I also love Nicole Richie’s bohemian, ‘60s style ensembles.

Favorite fashion era? This is so contradictory, but I would love to experience the 1920s flapper styles. I love the dresses and hats women wore, and I wish that I had more of a reason to wear such things now. I also adore 1940s-1950s style (i.e., Grace Kelly, Elizabeth Taylor, Irene Dunn, Rita Hayworth, and Lauren Bacall); their dresses were stunning. I like the idea that a woman would wear a dress back then to do the simplest things, like grocery shopping or cleaning the house.

You may not know… I am a vegetarian and an amateur animal rights activist, I eloped in Las Vegas on Christmas night last year, I am an ex-hairstylist, and I just turned 21.

  5. Aaw….You have such an equisite model kind of look. I found it funny that you some of the eras that I also have a bent towards. I love the 20’s but mostly like the 40’s. There’s just something about the look, style and fashions of that era. Like you said, it’s very simply yet stylish. You look beautiful!

  9. I don’t understand where the androgynous style comes in? Can someone please tell me? I love her minimalistic chic however I do believe it’s very close to being ultra feminine.

  10. Right you are, factorydreamer. But I do believe this was also said:

“Sometimes my style can be slightly feminine with a harder edge.”

I, personally, don’t care what the dictionary says. There are different levels of androgyny; at least… there are with my fashion statements. :]
