Real Style: Isabelle Küster - Hamburg, Germany

Isabelle is, in a word, magical. She inhabits a whimsical world that is all her own. It’s a place where make-believe can exist, where her outfits transform her into whoever she longs to be. Her sense of style is eccentric and enchanting. Much of her inspiration is suspended in the literary world, which we dig because being intellectual is the only thing better than being stylish!

Your look? I find it hard to describe myself in adjectives. People have said I’m boho, and I’ve been called a ‘fairy’ more than once (seriously!). Since personally, I really believe in a certain free spirit, I hope that reflects in my clothing.

Inspiration? I draw just as much inspiration for an interesting style from a book or theatre play. I saw a modern version of Romeo & Juliet where she was some kind of fairy, and afterwards I browsed the stores for a spiderweb-ish dress. I read Playing With The Grown-ups by Sophie Dahl, which made me want to go barefoot and eat nothing but strawberries. I love the 60’s – girls with long hair, freckles, and flowers everywhere. So my biggest inspiration is always some special feeling that makes me dance to a special song in my head and go for little dresses, quirky heels, and wavy hair.

Currently coveting? I am very sensitive for that feeling of summer leaving and fall slowly approaching, so everything knitty and combinable with summer’s little flower dresses to make them last a little longer… tights, oxford booties, nice scarves. Plus, I’m still in the rare group of girls who don’t think Ugg boots are the ugliest things in the world.

Grooving to? I haven’t been too much of a groover lately, but I just completely fell in love with Carla Bruni’s records. They’re very whimsical. Mando Diao is in town this weekend, so they’ll be the next to move my feet. I love Feist, Camera Obscura, Regina Spektor, and to admit it finally: I fell for Delta Goodrem’s first record.

Most beloved finds? I can’t take off this floppy hat that I just bought in a too-much-coffee mood. There are so few people wearing hats, so this still is somehow special. Oh, and I was in a vintage shop and magically didn’t find anything until I saw a skirt: flowers, darker shades of brown and pastels. I put it on as a shoulder-free dress and it fit perfectly.

Favorite haunts? Well, just hand me some coffee and I’m in the mood! I love to browse vintage shops. I find myself being someone who likes to have the possibility to dance but doesn’t necessarily need to go dancing in clubs. I’m more for some wine, cigarettes, and talk in some bar…and then dancing barefoot on the way home.

You may not know… I’m obsessed with theatre. I’ve done leading parts, but by far the least glorious role was sitting under a table for an entire night, moving the model of the evil plant in The Little Shop of Horrors.
