Real Style – Rhiannon Leifheit, Atlanta, GA
By Jenna Fain • Oct 17th, 2008 • Category: Style
Rhiannon, of the popular Liebemarlene brand, is no stranger to style accolades. Lucky Magazine, Marie Claire, and BUST have featured this favorite vintage-fashion darling. What we love most about Rhiannon is her total sense of adventure…and how naturally she pulls it off. She will wear anything from any era that she feels a connection to – Peter Pan collars, Victorian waists, and skirt suits. Rhiannon could honestly belong to any decade and be a perfect product of it. She wears the romantic outfits and accessories from past generations that most of us girls are too timid to try during the daytime – and with total flair. Take a page out of Rhiannon’s book, and start mixing things up!
Your trademark look?
My style is very old-fashioned. Very girly mixed with slightly crazy old lady, which means lots of frilly dresses with cardigans that might be on the stuffy side. And high heels to make it all a little less granny, but who am I kidding? I think modern stuff is fantastic - just not on me.
Gig?
I sell vintage full-time at Liebemarlene Vintage, so I spend most of my time at thrift stores and estate sales. But then I suppose I also spend a lot of time glued to my computer listing and shipping out, but also reading fashion blogs from around the world to find what vintage pieces girls are on the lookout for. Or at least that’s how I rationalize my Google Reader habit to myself.
What Inspires You?
Old movies and old books were what first got me into fashion, and they’re still huge inspirations. Lately, I really love silent film star prettiness, which is really a fairly messy version of it - big, frizzy hair and dresses with a few too many ruffles to be tasteful. I like things to be a bit overdone sometimes. Other than that, celebrity style icons like Zooey Deschanel and Alexa Chung, and magazines like Amelia’s, Russh, and Lula. Lots of international fashion blogs - Eleonore’s Modette blog, The Cherry Blossom Girl, and Pandora are particularly amazing.
Currently coveting?
After watching Picnic at Hanging Rock last weekend for the first time, I’m obsessed with all kinds of frilly white dresses and Victorian/Edwardian style accessories worn together in a modern way. Also, pretty much anything from Charles Anastase.
Grooving to?
’70s David Bowie, as usual! I’ve been obsessed with him for a long time.
Can’t live without…
Coffee when I wake up (and at 5 P.M. too!), old movies, going to antique sales with my boyfriend, and making visits to see my dog and my family in Tennessee.
Most beloved finds?
A yellow 1960s Aquascutum coat in an Illinois thrift store, a 1930s dress at a thrift store in Alabama, and a WWI era silent film scrapbook at an antique sale last month.
Favorite haunts?
Reading magazines at Borders, thrift stores, antique stores (I like the big, warehouse-y ones); also small town junk stores like the ones I left behind in Illinois when I moved last year.
Favorite fashion era?
Mainly the 1930s, although it’s a hard decade to dress exclusively in. I love the small fit of the tops of the dresses and all of the embellishments - lots of bows and funny sleeves and then the Southern Belle-inspired dresses of the late ’30s.
Closet envy?
There is this fantastic girl named Elizabeth who is only about my age, but already has a high-end vintage shop in the U.K. called Vintage-A-Peel that sells British boutique pieces from the ’60s and ’70s. I would love to go through her closet, but I might have trouble resisting the urge to steal. Seriously, all of that Biba and Ossie Clark! I’d be in heaven.
You may not know…
A few weeks ago I got put on the Modepass international ambassadors team with a bunch of lovely girls and fashion bloggers. It’s my favorite fashion sharing community and it’s just teeming with extra chic French girls, so I couldn’t be more honored!
