Real Style: Sophie Neuman, Liverpool – The U.K.
By Jenna Fain • Aug 13th, 2008 • Category: Style
Sophie is one of our favorite style inspirations: her minimalist tastes are always starkly elegant. Her look is stripped down and simplistic, yet reveals her innate creativity and bold timelessness. Most importantly, Sophie takes great pleasure from style and color, and she turns her outfits into artistic endeavors that are wearable and uniquely her own.
Your look? I am very drawn to masculine cuts, especially tuxedo jackets, blazers, and cigarette pants. I also enjoy wearing more feminine items such as mini dresses and fabrics like lace and chiffon. My favourite thing to do is experiment with colour. Whether it is a tomato red pant or a soft peach top, colour is an easy way to make an everyday outfit really pop. I like to keep things pretty simple. I rarely wear jewelry apart from the two gold rings I wear everyday.
Inspiration? I draw inspiration from the things around me, but I am especially inspired by literature and fashion photography. Erin Wasson, Chloe Sevigny, Emmanuelle Alt, Bianca Jagger, and Rinko Kikuchi all inspire me, but I think it is more important to trust your own instinct and wear what you are attracted to rather than what you thought looked good on somebody else.
Current obsessions? I don’t know if they are ‘current’ but I adore leather pants, basic loose fitting vests, platform shoes (the higher the better), and Dr. Martens.
Grooving to? Goldfrapp, Squeeze, The Stylistics, Bat For Lashes, Cat Power, Dizzee Rascal, Edith Piaf, George Michael, Grandaddy, Iggy Pop, Kid Sister, Kings Of Leon, Britney Spears, The Kills, A Tribe Called Quest, and The Rolling Stones.
Most beloved finds? My tomato red tapered pants I found at a charity (thrift) shop with the tags still on, the leather gladiator sandals from a boutique in Paris, my ‘The Specials’ tee (which I foolishly hacked into a vest) from back in the day, and a vintage sequined cardigan from the 1920s.
Favorite haunts? Charity shopping with my boyfriend, the movies, and dressing up for cocktails with my girlfriends. In terms of shops, I love Topshop, Zara, American Apparel, Office, and Primark for random bargains. Nothing beats charity shops and eBay for me, I love stumbling upon a hidden gem.
You may not know… That I read obsessively, absolutely everything I can get my hands on. The best presents I received this year were book vouchers, I was literally ecstatic.
