NYC’s Betelnut Girl Installation

From September 26 to October 5, artist Annamarie Ho will display, on an NYC street, an art installation recreating Taiwan’s popular “betelnut booths.” Betelnut is a popular, addictive stimulant sold only in Asia. In Taiwan, specifically, the product’s main clientele of working class men can purchase Betelnut on street corners and highways in decorated glass booths by the scantily-clad “betelnut girls.” The booths are so popular that they have become a significant part of Taiwan’s culture.
In an effort to comment on this “sexually provocative sales style” and explore the class and gender dynamics of this bizarre sales practice, Ho will use a hired actress and a SoHo storefront to recreate it on a city street for all to see. The installation will also include performance, video and photography.
