Buzzin’ All Over Me
By Patrick S. Lee • Jul 30th, 2008 • Category: TrendsAs I’m flipping through channels the other night, a GM spot airs featuring the new Pontiac Vibe and emerging hip-hop artist Shwayze as he hops in-and-out of the hatchback for an on-stage performance. It turns out, the Malibu trailer park (yes, one does exist in Malibu) native, Shwayze, is the focus of MTV’s new reality show, Buzzin’. The show - which is two scoops Rob & Big and one cup of Entourage - follows the comical escapades of Shwayze and his trusted wingmen as they aim for nothing short of stardom while having one hell of a good time along the way.
Brand-friendliness aside, it’s the music more than anything that is garnering all the attention. With producer/tabloid fixture Cisco Adler at the helm, Shwayze is creating a California hip-hop beach blend unheard of for quite some time. Amidst all the synth-heavy beats dominating the airwaves, Shwayze is a refreshing contrast. While the sound may be compared to that of Gym Class Heroes and Sublime, the breezy vibes suggest otherwise. Drawing from his laid-back roots and the rolling tides of the coastline, Shwayze’s first single “Buzzin’” is a mixture of acoustic strums, upbeat lyrics, and catchy melodies perfect for those sleepless parties that spill over into the early morning.
