Design Inspiration

More often than not, we tend to separate beauty and fashion trends into different categories. Superficially, it makes sense—the trends that affect how you dress your body are worlds away from the ones that affect your face. Still, like peanut butter and jelly, Will and Grace, and the other great combos before them, beauty and fashion always work best as a team.
Recently, products released by beauty heavyweights have begun to reflect this unstoppable partnership. The shades of red (i.e., nail polish) in Aaron de Mey’s Piha Red Collection for Lancome, for example, are modeled after the iconic red sole of a Christian Louboutin shoe. We can think of a few other beauty items that seem like nods to fashion—YSL’s deep blue and white nail polish combo, part of the company’s La Laque line of nail polish duos, are a perfect complement to the nautical themes we saw in the Spring ’09 shows at Fashion Week. The super slick look of the black lip glosses that debuted earlier this fall is awfully reminiscent of the season’s skin-tight liquid leggings. Even the recent onslaught of ultra volumizing mascaras go hand in hand with the voluminous black garments that designers like Marchesa have shown.
We think it’s great when beauty directors and fashion designers come together creatively. After all, at the end of the day, it really doesn’t matter where style originates…just as long as it’s great.
